Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein a few weeks back asked “Do we need Lilith Fair anymore?” She argues that women have made deeper in roads in the music industry (she uses Beyonce as case-in-point) and so a women-centered tour is no longer needed. A new book celebrates female musicians on the 90s and not just the riot grrrrrls. Girl Power: The Nineties Revolution in Music by Marisa Meltzer explores the role of women in music. Here are the author’s picks for 11 essential female musicians of the 90s. My question is why when we talk about women in music are the 90s always focused on? Why aren’t we talking about the essential artists of today? Do we need a Lilith Fair? I’d say yes, it’s the perfect time for the festival’s return. Read an excerpt
