{June 30, 2009}   Tuesday news of note 6.30.09

I’m having a great time hanging with the family. Getting lots of things done and no one wants to kill each other yet. Definitely feeling like it’s possible to go home again and enjoy yourself.

But I also had time to peruse the latest pop culture news:

  • My favorite story of yesterday about a kid that swapped his ipod for a cassette and realized all the music he’s missing out on.
  • Vote songs onto Paste magazine’s next free sampler cd
  • Fans of ER – Noah Wylie’s coming back to TV with this Steven Spielberg produced show.
  • This article says what would happen if Pushing Daisies hadn’t been cancelled. Sniff, sniff, tear 😦
  • Here’s a list of favorite shows that aren’t, but should be on DVD. How could they forget to include The Wonder Years?
  • Do you run? If so, you might want to check out what music American 50-k record holder Josh Cox listens to during a hard run and an easy run.

Was the past week like the most intense days or what? Between Iran and Michael Jackson, my bday and seeing family, strong emotions – both positive and negative are coming to the surface. But I have to say, I have never felt so alive!

Anyways, here’s the pop culture news for the day:

  • Gay Pride was celebrated through the country this past weekend. See some pics
  • Speaking of celebrity deaths, you may have not heard Michael Jackson died last week. I’ve been letting you in on all the good tributes out there. Here’s one of the best from The Roots with Erykah Badu
  • I missed it, but apparently New Edition rocked last night’s BET awards. I’ve heard some calling them the new Jackson Five. LA Times music blog Pop and Hiss weighs in, lists and grades all the Michael Jackson tribute performances. And here are some pics of celebs wearing Michael Jackson gear -Missed the BET awards show, like I did? You can see it here
  • Here’s the trailer for my ex-celebrity crush Ricky Gervais‘s new movie The Invention of Lying. I hope he’s funny in this one, unlike Ghost Town. I dumped him because of it. Tough, I know, it’s tough love 🙂
  • And finally, Pixar promises they won’t f&*% (my word) up Toy Story 3

I downloaded their new album on Itunes even though it is not supposed to be out until next week. I really like it. Check it out

{June 28, 2009}   Note about next week 6.28-7.5

The birthday festivities are officially over. It’s midnight and I must begin packing. I’m off to visit family for the next week. So, I’m not sure how often I’ll be able to update my blog next week, but will do the best I can.

I think a change of scenery is always good to freshen things up don’t you? Internet Hugs…I’m off.

{June 27, 2009}   Vegan Bday Cake

My roomate surprised me with a chocolate vegan birthday cake. It was so yummy! We both said this can’t be vegan. It doesn’t taste any different than regular cake. Orishas, a massage, vegan cake – this is turning out to be the best birthday ever!

I’ve heard there’s a specific club that is offering free admission if you dress like Michael Jackson tonight. I’m still trying to find out which one. But in the meantime, here’s a short list of the Michael Jackson parties happening in Miami tonight.

In my humble opinion The Hood Internet is the best at remixs. Here’s their version of Billie Jean

Wilco’s new record, out next week, is now streaming over at npr.org.

I can’t believe how much Michael Jackson’s death has effected me. I learned of it late and then stayed up half the night watching his videos. The silver lining, if there is one, is my re-found love of his music. My hope is that a whole new generation discovers it now.

Anyway, the show must go on as they say. I was told once you honor the dead by living your life the best you can. So here’s my weekly summary of the most interesting stuff I’ve found on my internet searches this week.

  • Most interesting Movie find: $9.99. The meaning of life is on sale and the price is only $9.99. This stop-motion animation fable stars Geoffrey Rush and Anthony LaPaglia. Playing in selected cities, but be on the look out for it.
  • Interesting TV find: The Goode Family is the new series by Mike Judge ( of King of the Hill, Beavis and Butthead/ Office space fame). It’s about a family that tries to be good, that is politically correct, but things have a way of going completely wrong. I think we will see ourselves in this family and hopefully we can laugh about it. Airs tonight @8:30pm on ABC
  • Most interesting music find: How about an import from the United Kingdom. You can hear some tracks online. I’m looking forward to the release of Lungs, the new album by Florence and the Machine out July 7. Sounds Bat for Lashes – ish. I’m sure FATM will soon to be on tv drama soundtracks. Hear some tracks on myspace.

UPDATE: Mog.com has some covers performed by Florence and the Machine like Beyonce’s Halo.

  • Most interesting web find: I’m not sure if it’s the most interesting, but it sounds like a good idea. I need some comfort food today. Follow Pizza Hut on twitter, facebook or other social networking sites and get some free food.
